As 2018 quickly comes to an end, we wanted to reflect on all the awesome work that has happened this year with service year alumni, corps members, and our staff. This year, we kicked off our Service Year Corps Members & Alums Newsletter (yay!); grew our community of engaged alumni; advocated for continued national service funding and won; made new resources for corps members, alumni, and programs to make service years stronger; and had events all across the nation from alumni and member picnics to professional development trainings. Not to mention all of the amazing work currently serving members did this year to support education, respond to disasters, and make our communities stronger than ever before. On Monday, December 3rd, Service Year Alliance held the first-ever Service Year + Opportunity Youth Summit. With inspiration from experts and those who have a lived experience as opportunity youth, the full day event explored ways that service year programs of all types can improve outcomes for opportunity youth. Participants at the Summit included three service year alums whose lives were transformed by a year of service: Kenvin Licayo (Literacy Lab), Xavier Jennings (YouthBuild), and Amanda Young (AmeriCorps VISTA). Service Year Alliance also released the new research, “Investing in Service Years: A Strategy to Ensure the Future Success of the Nation's Opportunity Youth,” which calls for 100,000 opportunity youth in national service annually by 2023. Made possible with the support from the Schultz Family Foundation and J.P. Morgan, the paper explores how expanding service year experiences for young people who are neither in school or working can help reduce inequities and serve as an important bridge to jobs. This year, we hosted two Virtual Career Fairs and two Virtual Higher Education Fairs, showing that employers and schools value the skills gained from doing a service year! Missed out?
