Service Year Alliance works to increase public and private investments in the service year ecosystem. We do this by developing and documenting evidence in priority focus areas to persuade decision makers — including federal, state, and local legislators, as well as private sector leaders — to unlock funds for service years. We elevate service years as an experience that transforms lives, strengthens communities, and fuels civic renewal. In all our work and focus areas we advance equity and address inequity.
Service Year Alliance is bringing together leaders from states, communities, and service year programs that are leveraging service years to respond to new and exacerbated community needs emerging as a result of COVID-19. Currently, we are leading a learning cohort on contact tracing.
Along with our Service Year Impact Communities network, we also take on projects in certain locales to bring service year programs and community stakeholders together to address systemic issues or build evidence for service years that, to date, might only be anecdotal. Work in this arena includes bringing service year programs and employers together in a location to create intentional talent and workforce development pipelines or bringing service year programs and community leaders and organizations together to build recruitment pipelines and leadership development in cities.
We bring together stakeholders — including states, communities, and service year programs — that are leveraging service years to respond to new community needs or building out impact data for solutions that are working well. Our cohorts are set up so the participants can learn from one another in real-time and we can properly document solutions that are effective and publish them. Work in this arena includes bringing service year programs, state commissions, and health agencies together to learn together on how to address new needs due to COVID-19 in communities or bringing service year programs and organizations together to build best and stronger practices to engage opportunity youth in service years.
We are committed to working with emerging service year programs and existing programs to develop and build new service year programs and enhance programmatic elements of existing programs that addresses unmet needs in communities and increases the opportunity for more Americans to serve. Work in this arena looks like helping organizations set-up a new service year program or address existing programmatic elements so the service year program is more successful in the beginning years or to expand to more locations and/or increase the number of service year corps members.
Through all our work in places, learning cohorts, and program development we collect data and best practices and then share those through our public facing portal — The Resource Hub. These include resources that are instrumental to programs, service year practitioners, corps members, and alumni to advance their goals including webinars, guides, and toolkits. The Resource Hub is a companion site to our ServiceYear.org — our state-of-the-art marketplace that connects young people interested in doing a service year with paid service year opportunities.
