Hi --
February is a month to celebrate love…and service! (If you haven't noticed, we celebrate service every month!). On Valentine’s Day, we made a call for your #AmeriLove stories to learn how service has brought best friends and partners together. Get some warm fuzzies by reading all the lovely stories below!
On February 18th, we also celebrated another holiday -- Presidents’ Day. Throughout history many presidents have contributed to promoting service years. To name a few, President John F. Kennedy formed the Peace Corps, President Lyndon B. Johnson started VISTA, President George H. W. Bush promoted Points of Light, President Bill Clinton inducted the first class of AmeriCorps, President George W. Bush expanded service with USA Freedom Corps, and President Barack Obama expanded funding through the Serve America Act.
Beyond presidential support, it takes people like you willing to step up and serve to keep this momentum going - so thank you for raising your hand! As always, below are news and resources to keep you connected and supported as a way to show our appreciation for the service you’ve done.
All the best,
Cali Moore
Manager, Career and Education Pathways
On Valentine's Day this year, we challenged alumni to share their #AmeriLove stories. Thanks to everyone who shared their beautiful stories of love and friendship! Here are some highlights:
Amy and Josiah met during their time in AmeriCorps 6 years ago. There were married a year later, and now have a 2 year old with baby #2 due any day! #AmeriBabies!!!
Rachael met the love of her life, Virginia, who she calls her "soul sister" while serving in AmeriCorps. Rachael says she loves Virginia “like Nicole loved Azan in 90 Day Fiancée” and Virginia loves her back “like a real housewife loves wine.” (Nothing beats reality TV love!!)
Jessica met one of her favorite people, DeAnna, in 2004 at the airport, right after landing in Denver to begin their service in AmeriCorps NCCC (Class X). They're getting together next month and meeting each other's sons for the first time! Check out their post with a photo.

We had a great Service Year Virtual Career Fair on Friday, February 15th - 32 employers hosted a recruitment booth, and over 450 soon-to-graduate corps members and alumni signed up! Check out the full list of employers here - there are still open positions if you’re on the job hunt! And a special thanks to our premium partners: Report For America, Youth Villages, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
We had 3 winners from our event raffle, picked from attendees that chatted with 3 or more employers...Drum Roll: Kingsley K., Greg T., and Thomas B.!
We’ll be hosting more fairs throughout the year - we’ll keep you posted through our newsletters first!
After graduating from West Virginia University, Amanda had trouble finding stable employment. She lost her part-time job at a restaurant and her financial struggles left her sleeping on friends’ couches without a home to call her own.
Things turned around when she found an opportunity to serve with AmeriCorps VISTA. She went on to do two service years at an adult literacy nonprofit in West Virginia where she managed hundreds of volunteers in various workshops and events.
Just like presidents that have kept national service in their agendas, each year there are members of Congress, governors, mayors, and civic leaders that make service a priority in their work. See a recap of those that were honored at this year’s Friends of National Service event, hosted by Voices for National Service.
