Gretchen is an AmeriCorps VISTA alum who thought she’d become a teacher—but her service year showed her there are so many ways to teach, lead, and make a difference. While serving with the America Reads VISTA program through the City of Burlington’s Economic Development Office, she created a reading partnership that connected college students with childcare providers in rural Vermont towns, helping kids build a love of literacy while gaining access to books and supportive mentors. She then became a VISTA Leader—an experience that launched her into a career in state government and community leadership.
Today, she serves as Executive Director of Volunteer NH, where she’s spent 15+ years helping others step into service and leadership. As a mom of seven and grandmother of five—with a son currently serving in AmeriCorps—Gretchen is passionate about showing young people that you don’t have to have it all figured out—just start—service will help you grow.
