Call Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX-8) & ask him to support Congressman Lewis' amendment (HR. 1602) to make the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award Tax-Free!
The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is granted to every person who completes a full-time or part-time AmeriCorps term to use toward higher education expenses or student loan debt. Unlike other student aid and scholarships, the AmeriCorps education award is taxed as annual gross income regardless of how it is used. This can leave young people who served burdened with a large, unanticipated bill come tax season.
When the House marks up their tax bill, Congressman John Lewis will offer an amendment to make the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award tax-free. It's up to us to tell Rep. Kevin Brady, the Chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee, to support this bill and adopt it as an amendment.
