For the third year in a row, the Trump Administration has proposed the elimination of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that supports national service programs like AmeriCorps, in its 2020 budget. The Peace Corps and YouthBuild, two other major national service programs, are on the chopping block as well.
If this proposal becomes reality, it will stop young Americans serving in more than 20,000 communities across the country where they are responding to natural disasters, fighting the opioid epidemic, supporting our veterans, and teaching and mentoring students in low-performing schools. We must take action to ensure that Congress rejects this devastating proposal and expands national service in the 2020 budget.
