Maisha's Story
She became a leader through her service year

“What I learned in that [service year]...is that you are an incredible ripple in this big pool that is the world around you. And all you have to do is show up.”

After spending a summer as a child living in a homeless shelter in Philadelphia, Maisha quickly learned about the importance of service. When her family life stabilized, her mom brought her and her siblings back to the same homeless shelter to serve dinner and since then, service has been a habit in her life.

Maisha went on to do a service year with AmeriCorps, helping children improve literacy and providing them with an enriched summer bridge learning experience. Today, Maisha serves as the National Vice President for Government Relations for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America where she works with members of Congress and their staff to fight for programs like the one she worked at during her service year. Her service year taught her the leadership and responsibility that helped get her where she is today.
