About the Position
SYA seeks a seasoned leader who is strongly committed to its mission and who can help build both the service year movement and SYA's internal capacity. The ideal candidate is an entrepreneurial and strategic leader who can inspire others, working across the organization to drive towards a common vision.
Reporting to the CEO and working closely with the Board, the President will play a key role setting strategy for the organization, building systems that increase impact and efficiency, and managing external affairs, in accordance with its strategic plan. Managing a team of 10, the President will have responsibility for overseeing SYA's revenue generation, through fundraising and earned income strategies, and will steward the Service Year brand, managing the communications and marketing functions. The President will also lead SYA's strategic planning processes and oversee the development of new products that will advance SYA's mission.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Strategic Planning
- Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, acting as a thought partner to SYA's CEO, departmental leaders, and external partners
- Coordinate across departments to set organizational strategy and meet the goals set forth in SYA's four-year strategic plan
- Design systems and frameworks to set priorities, allocate resources, and manage organizational performance against outcomes
- Develop and oversee a structured process for decision making, ensuring an organization-wide approach to strategic decision making
Fundraising and External Affairs
- Working closely with the Managing Director of Business Development and the development team, secure approximately $12M in annual funding from a wide array of individuals, corporations, and foundations
- Increase the funding, in terms of scale and funder diversity, building relationships with new high net-worth individuals and partnerships with corporations
- Lead the development and execution of an earned income strategy, ensuring SYA offers high value services to its network of partners
- Serve as a voice for SYA leadership, representing Service Year Alliance, corporate partners, service partners, funders, and other key stakeholders
Marketing and Communications
- Work closely with the Managing Director of Marketing and Communications and the marketing team to plan and execute SYA's annual marketing plan, while building and stewarding the SYA brand
- Oversee the development and communication of a strong, positive message to all external constituents
- In partnership with the marketing and communications team, identify creative opportunities for SYA to be represented in key media outlets and positioned as experts in the field
- Build a platform to solicit and tell stories that garner national attention and awareness around the transformative power of service years to impact communities and inspire young people to serve
New Product Development
- Evaluate opportunities to create and launch new products by leading market analysis, competitive review, and value proposition definition for products that will impact the service movement
- Commercialize new and existing product offerings and design go-to-market strategies to build sustainable revenue for SYA
- Engage cross-functional stakeholders and build the teams needed to launch core product offerings and initiatives
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- 12+ years of professional experience required, participation in a service program (AmeriCorps, military, Peace Corps, Teach For America, etc.) and cross-sector leadership highly preferred
- Deep belief in the power of service years to tackle our most pressing challenges, transform the lives of those who serve, and change the course of our country
- Humble leader with tremendous professional resolve and the ability to inspire and motivate others to action
- Comfort with ambiguity and change, ability to thrive in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment
- Bias for taking initiative to create and own new opportunities and solutions
- Strong learning mindset
- Exceptional interpersonal and organization skills
- Exceptional communications skills
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree (e.g. M.B.A, M.P.A, etc.) in a related field preferred
