Service Year Alliance denounces the Trump Administration’s proposed cuts to national service and AmeriCorps in the FY17 budget

WASHINGTON, DC - In response to the White House’s FY17 budget proposal that essentially eliminates the Corporation for National and Community Service, Shirley Sagawa, the CEO of Service Year Alliance, released the following statement today denouncing the disastrous cuts:

“The Trump Administration’s proposed cuts to national service in the remainder of FY17 will hurt thousands of communities that are relying on the support of national service programs like AmeriCorps. By proposing deep cuts to national service, the White House has proved to be completely out of touch with the American people — the overwhelming majority of whom support maintaining or increasing the federal investment in national service.

“Nearly 75,000 young Americans have deferred their college acceptances, turned down job offers, and made plans to spend the next year of their lives serving others. They are planning to build houses with Habitat for Humanity, tutor students through City Year, work with youth at Boys and Girls Clubs, and help homeless veterans find jobs to restart their lives. Eliminating national service will leave tens of thousands of Americans who have committed to serve unemployed with little notice and cripple the communities that rely on their service.

Service Year Alliance condemns these reckless cuts and encourages Congress to listen to the will of the American people by protecting and investing in national service.”

About Service Year Alliance
Service Year Alliance is working to make a year of paid, full-time service — a service year — a common expectation and opportunity for all young Americans. A service year before, during, or after college — or as a way to find your path — gives young people the chance to transform their lives, make an impact in their community, and become the active citizens and leaders our nation needs. Expanding service years has the power to revitalize cities, uplift and educate children at risk, and empower communities struggling with poverty. It can unite the most diverse nation in history, binding people of different backgrounds through common cause. Service Year Alliance is asking nonprofits, higher education institutions, cities and states, companies and foundations, policymakers of both parties, and people of all ages to join the movement.
