Every year, tens of thousands of AmeriCorps members complete their service year having made an immeasurable impact in the communities they serve. In recognition of that service, AmeriCorps alums earn an education award that they can use to pay for higher education or pay off student loans.

Unfortunately, as many of you know, unlike other scholarships and student aid, the education award is taxed as income. This is not fair. This policy leaves young people burdened with a large, unanticipated amounts of money owed at tax time and sometimes even deters AmeriCorps alums them from ever using their education awards. 

Service Year Alliance is calling on Congress to update current law by making the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award tax-free, eliminating the tax burden that prevents many AmeriCorps alums from using their education award.
